Staying Healthy While Traveling

Here are some of the most important basic ways to make sure to stay healthy while traveling long-term.

Pre-Travel Checkups

Talk to a travel doctor a few months prior to leaving home. A travel doctor will help make sure you have all necessary vaccines based on where you are going and can answer any detailed questions. You may also need additional vaccines if you plan to move to a new destination while you're abroad.

Travel Medical Insurance

You'll also want to get travel medical insurance, including coverage for evacuation back home in case of emergency. It's easy to find and compare options by searching online. Look at multiple websites, because prices and coverage vary widely.

Prescription Medications

Plan for your medications. Research if they're available in your destination and the associated costs.

Plan ahead for prescription medications. Depending on the medication and country, some medications can be obtained through a local pharmacy, but in others, a doctor or clinic visit could be necessary. Also, some meds may not be available in certain countries and brand names may differ. Certain medications are expensive and may not be covered by your regular insurance plan while abroad. Travel insurance may or may not cover your meds.

First Aid Kit

Bring a good first aid kit. For more remote destinations, you may also want to bring antibiotics and pain medications. In some countries it will be important to carry sunscreen, insect repellent, and antidiarrheals. Make sure to be aware of local laws for importing medications.

Water and Food Safety

Research whether it's safe to drink tap water. If not, you may also need to avoid raw produce or eat produce with a thick peel like bananas. You may also need to use bottled water to brush your teeth.

When eating out, especially street food, choose spots frequented by locals. Look for vendors where the surfaces and utensils look clean. Notice whether meat is kept cold and whether dishes and surfaces are clean.

Being Prepared

Consider the possibility of harsh weather conditions. You wouldn't want to be in Stockholm during winter without a jacket and boots! Plan ahead and always look at the weather when deciding where to go.

Pace Yourself

Pace yourself to avoid burning out or getting sick. Keep in mind that traveling can interrupt the regular daily routine. Adequate rest, liquids, and nutrition are very important. Allow time to recover from jet lag.

Health Information

Carry any relevant medical information with you — medical and surgical history, list of meds and allergies, and emergency contact. Keep contact info for your travel insurance handy.

General Health Practices

Above all else, follow basic health advice:

  • Eat healthy and balanced meals, including fresh vegetables.

  • Stay hydrated

  • Sleep at least seven hours every night

This is not a replacement for official medical advice. Talk to your doctor about your unique situation before departing on a long trip.
